چکیده

Abstract Two strong earthquakes hit Thessaly region on March 3rd, 2021 (M w = 6.3) and 4th, 6.1). The epicentres of the were located at approximately 23 29 km respectively NW Larissa, one most populous cities in Greece. Several aftershocks followed thereafter. Although no injuries recorded, several structures suffered significant damage close to epicentre, while some others collapsed. Approximately 300 residents village Damasi transferred temporary settlements tents. event occurred during COVID19 lockdown created stress disruption residents. This paper focuses earthquake swarm itself as well damages observed residential buildings, schools, churches earthquake-stricken region. mainly impacted low-rise domestic masonry more modern reinforced concrete built following recent seismic regulations almost unaffected. typology buildings region, together with photographs demonstrating extent are presented herein. Despite rather satisfactory performance Greece, preliminary investigations from Earthquakes showed that there is still a level vulnerability existing building stock constructed using traditional methods materials. issue could re-emerge future striking other rural areas something needs be addressed systematically future.

Learning from Earthquakes The Tohoku , Japan , Tsunami of March 11 , 2011 : Effects on Structures

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has sponsored several reconnaissance teams to survey effects of the great East Japan earthquake and Tohoku tsunami. The first of these was the tsunami team, which traveled to Japan from April 15 to May 1, 2011, and focused on tsunami effects on coastal buildings, bridges, port facilities and coastal protective structures. All seven members of the t...

Luminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories

Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the...

Forecasting earthquakes and earthquake risk

This paper reviews issues, models, and methodologies arising out of the problems of predicting earthquakes and forecasting earthquake risk. The emphasis is on statistical methods which attempt to quantify the probability of an earthquake occurring within specified time, space, and magnitude windows. One recurring theme is that such probabilities are best developed from models which specify a ti...

The Frame Problem from an Engineering Perspective

Since its introduction in 1969, the phrase \frame problem" has been attributed various interpretations. Most researchers in the eld of Artiicial Intelligence, deene the frame problem as the problem of nding an eeective representation for reasoning about change. Logicians use the phrase to refer to a much less general, technical problem within logic, whereas philosophers tend to interpret the ph...
